Matthew, goodnight

Rather than just presenting people with interesting songs, I’ve decided to try and find songs that touch on evil subjects, but without openly admitting so. Last post I talked about “Tyler” by the Toadies, which, while easily interpreted as a love song, is actually a vehicle for a story about delusion and rape.

Today I’m going to talk about a song by the band Coheed and Cambria called “Time Consumer”

the young stale memories of play the role to your part
librarian find me the
pole the one that kicks your head in
with my own time role your own
innocence by
grab on to my sleeve the one that grabs at your ankle
debate to understand that we all have a flaw
then fail to represent your
life as you know it
God grant you one wish to turn back the time... correct
and create
making sense of

chorus:
me and my star: Matthew,
good night
you know, by law, when you'll be forgiven
Maria, my star,
Matthew goodnight
you know, my lord, when you'll be forgiven

so they pulled your confidence down with those verbal
discrepancies
now and then you'll gain what they've lost through a challenge
of unpronounced
pain is only a pulse if you just stop feeling it
you
might be able to use the very thing that makes us up

chorus
repeat

wait, now, here when will you believe?
me i'm merely
asking you to help me when did i say to murder?
wait, now, here, please hear
me out
time consumer, time consuming, consume me

chorus repeat

Now, like “Tyler” the lyrics don’t seem very important at the start (especially if you aren’t really familiar with C&C). Claudio Sanchez can really hit those highs, which can be distracting to those trying to figure out what the hell he is talking about.

Unlike our previous song analysis, nothing substantial can really be taken away from the song until you learn the fiction behind the lyrics, something C&C fans were deprived of until this past summer.

“Time Consumer” is about infanticide, and the time two parents spend delaying their childrens'inevitable demise. Without going into too much detail, the parents in the story are being forced to poison their two children, named Matthew and Maria, in order to save them for a more horrible fate waiting down the road.

Send me your suggestions for future “taboo topics in disguise” songs!
